Revenge vs Repeat
Will it be revenge or repeat? The Detroit-Pittsburgh rematch certainly offers the best hockey of the year and an exciting finish to the year. The Round 3 analysis looks at who will cash in depending on which team wins, who's hot and who's not, and projected standings. Who do you think will win? Discuss it in the Trash Talk Forum.

Back in it 6/3/2009 2:20:00 AM
Pittsburgh survived the second period on their heels, and eked out a close win in Game 3. Evgeni Malkin had three assists to everyone's/no one's benefit while Sergei Gonchar and Henrik Zetterberg had two points each. Eight-point-nights helped poolies Jay Dart and Altaf Champsi climb closer to contention for the third money prize if Detroit wins.

Halfway done or just beginning? 5/31/2009 11:40:00 PM
Detroit matched last year's 2-0 opening home stand after another 3-1 victory and again, Detroit's depth provided the scoring. That said Pittsburgh was stronger in these two games than the first two a year ago. Are we on our way to a short series, or will the Pens mount a rally as they did last year?

Wings take game 1 5/30/2009 11:12:00 PM
Detroit won the first of two weekend games with some good bounces and nice saves. A couple of pool points were thrown in for good measure. Despite good pressure from Pittsburgh in the second period and throughout the game, it's advantage Red Wings after game one.

Detroit hurting but still overpowers Chicago 5/28/2009 9:40:00 AM
The Red Wings continued to play without numerous key players but still managed over 40 shots and the overtime victory to eliminate Chicago. Thirty-six Hawks picks are eliminated and we are left with Detroit and Pittsburgh for the second straight year. We also have an interesting story developing on who might win the pool. Stay tuned as the Round 3 Analysis will be posted soon. The Finals start on Saturday!

Penguins back for second crack at Cup 5/27/2009 10:18:00 AM
The Pittsburgh Penguins are in top form at the right time, and they will be returning to the Cup Finals after their loss last year to the Red Wings. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are being supported by Bill Guerin and Chris Kunitz among others, to help them break the trend of teams failing the year after a Cup loss. Meanwhile, Carolina's loss knocks out 38 picks including goaltending leader Cam Ward.

Hopes dashed 5/27/2009 10:13:00 AM
Pittsburgh's sweep of the unheralded Carolina Hurricanes has dashed the hopes of the anointed pool favourite, Martha Gill, after the pool analysis and trash talk forum participants almost guaranteed her victory. With an underwhelming performance by her darkhorse picks Carolina and Chicago in round three, and her Cup pick gone, Martha will finish the pool within spitting distance, but out of, the money.

Looking ahead 5/25/2009 12:01:00 AM
Now that we are seeing the likelihood of a Detroit-Pittsburgh final, we might look at who picked those teams to win, and will benefit from the ten-point bonus. It is all but certain that this will be impactful in determining the money winners. In Pittsburgh's corner, we have Mike Walsh, Li Tan, Karen Savoie, and Samuel Wexler. In Detroit's, there is Ryan Slack, Jerome Brouard, and John Upper.

Battle of the infirm 5/24/2009 11:54:00 PM
Sunday's Wings-Hawks matchup wasn't quite a battle of AHL farm teams, but numerous key people were out with injuries. Nicklas Lidstrom joined Pavel Datsyuk on the sidelines for Detroit - two of their three heavily picked players - while Nikolai Khabibulin was out for Chicago and Martin Havlat was limited to seven minutes of ice time after his injury on Friday. Detroit perservered as Henrik Zetterberg and Marian Hossa had multiple-point games.

Rematch Pending 5/24/2009 11:32:00 PM
Round three is turning out to be low on drama and is likely to end early. Last year's Cup finalists Pittsburgh and Detroit are both on the verge of returning, in a walk against their conference finals opponents. The last time the same two teams met the finals two years in a row was in 1983 and 1984, when the Oilers avenged their 1983 sweep by ending the Islanders' dynasty in 1984 and starting their own.

Hurricanes petering out 5/24/2009 2:37:00 AM
A decisive victory by Pittsburgh and another dominant performance by Evgeni Malkin has put Carolina down three games to none, without much promise of making it to game five. Bill Guerin and Chris Kunitz - picked solely by David Hood and George Crothers, respectively - have been putting up big numbers while Carolina's troubles has helped keep leader Mike Walsh ahead by seven points.

Chicago responds with OT win 5/23/2009 12:24:00 AM
Patrick Sharp's seventh playoff goal was the overtime winner for Chicago. Nobody picked him but he has 11 points these playoffs. This game was more about who was not playing by the end. Pavel Datsyuk had a sore foot (aww) and missed the whole game. Nikolai Khabibulin's team won but he didn't return after the second, giving Cristobal Huet the OT win. And Martin Havlat - 15 points for 9 entries - left after being checked in to the wall with his head down.

Malkin and company take big lead 5/21/2009 11:32:00 PM
Evgeni Malkin's three-goal, four-point night helped Pittsburgh take a 2-0 series lead against the Hurricanes. Carolina and Chicago, both down 2-0 going home, have big games ahead to keep themselves in the running. So far their failures this series is preventing poolies who are relying on them to make a challenge, such as Martha Gill, from making their way up the standings. George Crothers, led all poolies tonight with nine points.
