Kings victory provides pool with final jolt
So few players and contenders for the final round did not hamper the drama at the end of Lord Stanley's Pool. A shutout, the Cup bonus, and combination of players scoring lifted two people, barely on the register before the round, into the top spots on the podium. Meanwhile a scoring play in the final game determined the rest of the top five. See the Dream Team, who was hot and not at the end, and other final analysis. Congratulations on all contenders and participants in the pool. See you next year!

LA won the Cup on an OT goal by the fourth line.

Thompson, Nolan charge at the end for top spots 6/14/2014 1:03:00 AM
In the end, despite the forecasts and the scenario building, we had two longshots entering the final round lifted into the top spots. Congratulations to Jessica Thompson on an incredible final round surge to win the 2014 Lord Stanley's Pool. Nolan Sarner, who even in the final round thought he couldn't win, surged to second. Jessica was 12th and Nolan 23rd after the third round, and got a boost both from Jonathan Quick and from the Kings' Cup bonus. Third place is a tie between Stephen Craig and Joan Coveny while the pool leader for most of the playoffs - Samuel Wexler - finishes fifth, just one point out of the money.

Kings win second Cup in three years 6/14/2014 12:54:00 AM
The Los Angeles Kings have won their second Stanley Cup in three years. After surviving eight elimination games on their way to the final including a 3-0 deficit in round one, they made the final round look easy. The Kings are the most exciting team in the league and they proved it in this playoff.

Out of nowhere, Jessica Thompson poised to win 6/10/2014 2:06:00 AM
Considered a longshot entering the final round, Jessica Thompson would be solidly in first place if Los Angeles wins on Wednesday. Jonathan Quick's puts Jessica within the 10-point bonus for calling an LA cup victory - and with Quick's win in Game 4 would have a three-point lead over the trio currently tied for first. And completely unforeseen, Nolan Sarner is now a money contender - an LA win would have him tied with the trio, or ahead of them in second place.

Three-way tie 6/7/2014 11:24:00 PM
Los Angeles fought back from three two-goal deficits and won again in overtime to take a 2-0 lead on the Rangers in the Stanley Cup Final. For the pool, Marian Gaborik's point lifted Samuel Wexler back into a share of the lead. It is now a three-way tie on top of the pool in what is shaping out to be a remarkably close finish. Sam is tied with Stephen and Joan for the top three positions with Frank Pileggi and Scott Lee (if LA wins) two points back, and Jessica Thompson three back (if LA wins).

That didn't take long... 6/4/2014 10:35:00 PM
It took only 26 minutes of Round 4 hockey for Stephen Craig and Joan Coveny to get the two points they needed from Jeff Carter and Drew Doughty to take over first place. Stephen and Joan, as they will be known henceforth, are now in great position to tie for first place and share the top prizes, or at least remain on the podium. Samuel Wexler has dropped to third where he remains only two points ahead of Frank Pileggi (and Scott Lee in the case of LA winning the Cup).

Points adjustment narrows leaderboard further 6/4/2014 8:07:00 PM
Fixing the stats is the right thing to do. So in this case it cost Samuel Wexler a point off his lead, as Marian Gaborik had an assist taken away. This is why I check the stats each round! And possibly one of the reasons it takes me a while to get the end of round analysis done.

Coast to coast finals 6/2/2014 8:31:00 AM
It's the dream matchup for the NHL: New York against Los Angeles. It is not the dream matchup for the pool, with only 8% of the pool picks active in the final and only two people with more than three players left (neither of whom are in the running). But there will still be some drama as the leaders jockey for position on the podium. See who was hot in Round 3 (including some remarkable climbs in the standings), some what-if scenarios and more in the Round 3 Analysis. Good luck in the final round!

Jonathan Quick
Jonathan Quick's game 3 shutout changed the stakes - bringing new leaders onto the pool podium.
Defending champs sent home 6/2/2014 8:17:00 AM
Chicago has been eliminated after losing game 7 in overtime. That is 294 picks, 17 Cup picks, knocked out leaving LA's 116 and the Rangers' 43. That spells the end of the game for many of our participants but we will still see an interesting race for the podium in the final games. Stay tuned for the Round 3 Analysis, coming soon.

Can't Kill the Kings 6/2/2014 12:23:00 AM
They survived seven elimination games in the first two rounds, and now in their first and last elimination game of the Conference Finals, the Kings survived an early two-goal hole to win in overtime. It was a great series and either team could have taken it. So it's LA vs NY in the finals.

Kane, Doughty keep leader board competitive 5/31/2014 10:51:00 AM
Patrick Kane has scored 7 points in the last two games to keep Samuel Wexler on top, but Drew Doughty kept things interesting with two points last night for second-place Stephen Craig. Benefitting from both, Joan Coveny and Frank Pileggi are both solidly in the top five. Doughty also helped Chris McCluskey remain on top of the hot list for round 3 with 38 points in the conference finals.

Game 7 goes Sunday 5/30/2014 10:44:00 PM
An incredible see-saw battle ended with a Chicago victory to force Game 7 between these two great NHL teams. After LA won seven times facing elimination in the first two rounds, the Blackhawks are treating them to a taste of their own medicine. Game 7 on Sunday should be one for the ages.

Canadien hopes dashed in the Big Apple 5/30/2014 2:10:00 AM
Henrik Lundqvist allowed no more goals after being yanked in game 5, and the Montreal Canadiens are going home. 68 Habs picks (8 Cups) are eliminated in favour of the Rangers' 43. Along with that goes the remaining hopes of Paul Martin, Peter Seemann and others. Pool leader Samuel Wexler lost what might have been his ace-in-the-hole in the final round, PK Subban. And other than in Toronto where they are rejoicing, many a Canadian hockey fan have tears in their beers.
