Pittsburgh repeats as Cup champions
The Pittsburgh Penguns have won their second straight Cup, and Sidney Crosby has won his second straight Conn Smythe trophy, the first player to do so since Mario Lemieux. And with that, Lord Stanley's Pool is done for another year. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all for participating. Be sure to check out the Final Analysis for the dream team, the key to the pool, who was hot (and not) at the end, and more analysis of this year's Lord Stanley's Pool.

Matt Steeves, Jessica Thompson, Michael McShane take home pool honours 6/12/2017 5:35:00 PM
Pittsburgh's victory provided a 10 point bonus to those who picked them, and that has benefitted all of the money-winners this year. Congratulations to Matt Steeves on winning the pool! He climbed quickly in the final round, ended up in a three-way tie for first but was the only one of the three who picked the Pens. Jessica Thompson cashed in on Matt Murray's shutouts in the final two games to leap into second for her fourth straight podium finish, only two points behind Matt. And Michael McShane, the only poolie other than Matt to have more than three players left in the final, places third.

Penguins win in 6, repeat as champions 6/12/2017 5:29:00 PM
The Pittsburgh Penguins have won the Cup for the second straight year, the first team to do so in the history of Lord Stanley's Pool. The last team to repeat were the Red Wings of '97 and '98, the second of those being the first year of the Pool. Game 6 turned out to be all about Matt Murray and his second straight shutout, making him the #2 goalie in the pool despite missing more than half of the playoffs.

Murray shutout puts Jessica within reach 6/9/2017 12:55:00 PM
Don't look now, but Jessica Thompson is now in position to challenge for a podium finish for the fourth year in a row. Matt Murray's shutout was just what she needed, as a Pittsburgh Cup would put her in a tie for third with Shane Kozlowich with 126 points. In that event Murray's win in the clinching game would put Thompson alone in third by one point. Shane would need a point from Justin Schultz to tie for third, or two to take over third and knock Jessica out. Similarly Pasqi Porco would need three points from Phil Kessel to tie and four to pass Jessica. Schultz and Kessel could also accumulate these points over two games if the Pens lose game 6 and win game 7. On the other hand, an unlikely assist from Murray would prop up Jessica and a shutout in the final win would seal it for sure. (If Nashville wins the final two games, all this is moot.)

Penguins dominate Game 5, one win away from repeat Cup 6/9/2017 12:46:00 PM
The Pittsburgh Penguins are one win away from repeating as Cup champions. A 6-0 victory in game 5 put them ahead in the series 3-2 and they need to win only one of the next two games. However every time there has been a blowout in the 2017 playoffs, the losing team came back the following game to win. It's not over yet!

Big night in Nashville nearly seals it for Matt Steeves 6/4/2017 12:11:00 AM
Nashville's five-goal outburst in game three has given Matt Steeves a six-point night, while all other contenders had but one. The big night has lifted Matt, as expected, onto the podium for good, and within one point of first place regardless of who wins the series. Continued Nashville success will see Matt create an insurmountable lead, while a Penguins championship will give him the ten-point bonus. This one is all but done! If Nashville wins the Cup, Phil Victor and Pasqi Porco will try to hold on for 2nd and 3rd, while a Pittsburgh win would have Michael McShane in second and Shane Kozlowich fighting to stay in third.

Steeves, McShane getting ready for pool victory 6/1/2017 4:43:00 AM
On the same night that Phil Victor finally closed the gap to tie the pool leader with Pasqi Porco only a point behind, Matt Steeves and Michael McShane have staked their claim for the top two spots needing only two more wins from Pittsburgh. Matt has climbed into a tie for first with Michael among those in line for the 10-point Cup bonus, and with six players to Michael's four, will likely take the lead for good. Third place in a Penguins Cup win would be Shane Kozlowich.

Credit where it's due 6/1/2017 4:42:00 AM
Jake Guentzel's great rookie playoff run continues. With two more goals in game 2 Guentzel is now second all-time in playoff goals by a rookie and is fourth overall in scoring with 19 points. Credit to Laura Tackaberry who is the only pool contestant who picked him!

Finals storylines already playing out after game one 5/30/2017 7:51:00 AM
Only one game in, and we are seeing the leaderboard change as expected for the final round. Matt Steeves and his full roster collected five points to move from 12th into 7th and only one point back of the leading Pittsburgh entry. Meanwhile Phil Victor and the rest of the contenders narrowed the gap on leader Rubop J-Slip, with Phil now only one point back.

Contenders vie for pool glory in final days 5/30/2017 7:18:00 AM
The finals are here, and as we watch this exciting series, about 10 contenders are vying for a spot on the podium of Lord Stanley's Pool. Check out the Round 3 Analysis to see which players to watch in the finals, as well as who was hot (and not) in the round three.

Leader wiped out, it's a race to the finish 5/26/2017 1:55:00 PM
After leading for two rounds, Rubop J-Slip finishes first after round three with a five point margin, but with Ottawa out he has lost his last players. While still possible for Rubop to finish in the money, it will be tough - requiring a very low scoring series with Nashville as the victors. Speaking of victors, Phil Victor is in second, positioned well to challenge Rubop and third-place Pasqi Porco. But further down are those who would leap into the lead with the ten-point bonus if Pittsburgh wins - and a couple of people have an extra man advantage - Matt Steeves enters the final with six players and Michael McShane with four. Stay tuned for Round 3 Analysis coming soon!

Double-OT Thriller 5/26/2017 1:47:00 PM
The Cup champions are headed back to the finals. Pittsburgh outlasted the Senators and got the final good bounce to win an exciting and emotional double-overtime game seven. The Pens will try to become the first repeat champion since Detroit in 1998.

Double-OT Heartbreaker 5/26/2017 10:45:00 AM
You can't get much closer than that. Ottawa pushed their playoff run beyond what nearly everyone expected, until double overtime in game seven against the defending Cup champions. But in the end it is heartbreak, as one bounce would have sent the last Canadian team into the finals.
