Joy to the World
Joy Smith has won Lord Stanley's Pool! A performance for the ages, with a record high score and a remarkable set of picks that were strong enough to overcome not receiving the 10-point Cup bonus. Congratulations also to Barbara Ellen Kennedy, charging into second place on Washington's win, and King James (Jacob) also riding the Caps win into third. For final commentary and fun facts, check out the Round 4 analysis.

Ovechkin and the Capitals have finally won the ultimate prize.

Thank you for another fun year 6/13/2018 2:13:00 AM
Thank you to all who participated in Lord Stanley's Pool - the largest yet. A special thanks to my able assistant Joel Kronis for helping with the boxscores - Joel will be a great sports statistician! See you all next year. Have a great summer!

Election night!!! 6/8/2018 12:21:00 PM
Those who know me know I'm heavily involved in election campaigns, and naturally the Cup was won on the night of a very long and close election in my riding. In the end we won and it certainly felt like it looked for Ovie when he raised the Stanley Cup. And so... sorry for the delayed update on the exciting finish to the pool!

Joy sets all-time pool high score 6/5/2018 3:32:00 AM
Joy Smith has broken the all-time record for most points in Lord Stanley's Pool. With a 7-point night Joy has 189 total, breaking the record 187 set in 2001 by Vince Brescia and then matched in 2008 by Bo Chen. With at least one and possibly three games to go, Joy will only increase that number. But what is certain is that Joy is locked in to win the pool regardless of who wins the Cup - and with a record-high score yet to be determined.

Washington takes control with two victories 6/3/2018 2:32:00 AM
The Capitals finally won their first ever Cup Finals game, and now they have a win at home as well. Evgeni Kuznetsov got the game 3 winner after speculation he'd miss the game with an injury. But we have at least two and as many as four games left... lots of hockey still to play before it's over.

Six players is an advantage 5/28/2018 11:53:00 PM
In the final series there are four poolies with the maximum six players left, and naturally they had the best results in game 1. Fred Brown and Nathan Slack, the two not on the leaderboard, each had 7 points on Monday while Joy Smith and Ryan Chirnomas, the two in the top five, had 6. Joy is now only 12 points away from breaking the all-time high score in Lord Stanley's Pool.

Vegas takes opener 5/28/2018 11:48:00 PM
Vegas is continuing where they left off, winning their first game in the finals. The Capitals, meanwhile, whose other finals appearance was in 1998 during the inaugural Lord Stanley's Pool, are now 0-5 in finals games. However, the Capitals have been defying just as many expectations as Vegas these playoffs, so we shouldn't count anyone out just yet.

Joy takes nine-point lead into the final round 5/24/2018 6:27:00 PM
Joy Smith is in a strong position to take home the 20th Lord Stanley's Pool, with a nine-point lead going into the final and six players still active. Also in the top five are Larry Coole, King James (Jacob), Robert Struthers, and Ryan Chirnomas, though not all of them will be in the running. Further analysis and the list of contenders coming soon!

Washington, Vegas to battle in unlikely final 5/24/2018 6:04:00 PM
After an exciting playoff where any number of teams could have made it through, we are down to Washington and Vegas, one of which will win the Cup for the first time. Will Washington finally snap their curse (or have they already?) or will Vegas be the first team to win in their expansion year? And more importantly, who will be crowned in Lord Stanley's Pool? See the contenders, along with other analysis, who's hot and not, and projections for the final round in the Round 3 analysis.

Final contenders to be determined on Wednesday 5/22/2018 3:23:00 AM
Game 7 between Tampa and Washington will determine who has a shot to land on the podium. But a few entries are primed if Vegas completes their expansion-year run. Joy Smith is sitting pretty, one of only two people (Fred Brown being the other) still with 9 players though they will lose three on Wednesday. Joy is building a lead that will be hard to overcome even if her Vegas Cup pick doesn't pan out. Ryan Chirnomas has climbed into the top 5 and will be laughing if the Capitals with game 7, but if not, a Vegas Cup could still land him in 3rd. Marcia Chappell has been hanging around in the top 10 for a few weeks and could also land on the podium if Vegas wins - especially if Tampa prevails on Wednesday. Stay tuned for the full analysis after the end of round 3.

And Canada's Cup Dreams Are Stifled For The 25th Year 5/21/2018 8:15:00 AM
It's been 25 years since a Canadian NHL team has won the Stanley Cup, and after Winnipeg's elimination it will be at least one more. Vegas solved the Jets halfway through the first period in Game 1 and could not be stopped the rest of the way. 376 Winnipeg picks are out while the expansion Golden Knights continue their silver dreams.

Final Reckoning 5/20/2018 3:54:00 AM
Two more teams will fall before we get to the Stanley Cup Finals, and which teams survive will determine which entries will have a chance at landing on the Lord Stanley's Pool podium. Vegas and Tampa Bay each need one more win while Winnipeg and Washington will push to come back. The final reckoning is upon us...

Halfway through round 3, new leaderboard takes hold; not over yet 5/18/2018 1:27:00 AM
As we reached the halfway point in round 3, we had already seen the wholesale change of the leaderboard that we expected to see in the final two rounds. Only one of the top entries after round 2 remain there, while people as far back as 64th just six days ago are now in the mix. Joy Smith climbed from 32nd to the top spot and has a six-point lead over Larry Coole. If Vegas advances to the final, Joy will be sitting pretty. If not, well, it's a new game once again. King James (Jacob) is tied for third with former #1 Scott Poitras while Maria Chappell, another Vegas picker, is in 5th.
