After slowly chipping away at the leader's margin over the last week, Sean Smith took the lead on the final day to win by one point and take home the $150 top prize. Richard Gretzinger, who led the pool every day except one will settle for a second place tie with Sam Fielding and Russell Reed. Congratulations to the winners! Thank you to everyone for playing.
The tournament has its all-star team, and the pool of course has its Dream Team. This year's is distinctly international. The roster that would have managed the maximum possible points is as follows: Rick Nash, CAN (27); Joe Thornton, CAN (24); Zigmund Palffy, SVK (16); Daniel Sedin, SWE (16); Alexander Ovechkin, RUS (15); Goalie: Tomas Vokoun, CZE (27); Czech Republic to win (5). Maximum total: 130 points. Key to the pool 5/15/2005 9:55:04 PM Despite only 25 entries, Shoot for Gold 2005 was a difficult pool to win. The key was not only to pick both Rick Nash and Joe Thornton, but also a solid and consistent supporting cast. There was no room for duds, as Sean Smith's entry shows. Jagr's assists brings twist to final results 5/15/2005 9:45:03 PM Jaromir Jagr's two assists not only led the Czech Republic over Canada, they also lifted Russell Reed into a come-from-behind tie for second place in the pool. It will spread the second and third place money among three people, $33.33 each. Sean Smith edges ahead on Datsyuk assist 5/15/2005 1:40:06 PM Sean Smith has taken the lead on Pavel Datsyuk's assist in Russia's 6-3 bronze medal victory over Sweden. He now has the edge with only the Canada-Czech game remaining. Points by Simon Gagne or Brendan Morrison would lift Sam Fielding while Russell Reed is looking for a big game from Jaromir Jagr. Richard Gretzinger can only hope to hold on to a tie for second. Pool tied entering final day 5/14/2005 11:42:19 PM It couldn't be any closer - literally. Simon Gagne's assist has lifted Sam Fielding into a three-way tie for first place with Richard Gretzinger and Sean Smith. Meanwhile, Russell Reed will need to root for Jaromir Jagr to have a big game against Canada if he wants a share of the money. Canada meets Czechs in final 5/14/2005 11:40:07 PM After lulling us into a sense of security with a 4-0 lead (and convincing at least one person to stop watching the game thinking it was a done deal), Martin Brodeur had to be dominant to hold Canada to a 4-3 victory over Russia. The Czech Republic beat Sweden in overtime and will face Canada in the gold medal game tomorrow. Pool now tied, winner anybody's guess 12/5/2005 5:38:03 PM Sean Smith has come up to tie leader Richard Gretzinger on Pavel Datsyuk's goal. The difference between them is Datsyuk vs. Ilya Kovalchuk. But both of them lost Marian Hossa, leaving them vulnerable to Sam Fielding, who is one point behind and has Simon Gagne and Brendan Morrison. Russell Reed is two points back and has Kovalchuk and Jaromir Jagr. A longshot is Richard Rikkonen, five points back, but after losing Mike Modano, has the same players as Sean Smith and can only hope for 2nd or 3rd. |

With today's quarterfinal defeats, Mike Modano and Marian Hossa were the only players eliminated from the pool. The remaining four teams get two more games automatically (including the Bronze game), but today's losers go home. Modano was picked by five people including contender Ricard Rikkonen while Hossa was picked by three - the co-leaders and me (I was out of contention long ago). Sweden, Czechs advance 12/5/2005 5:28:47 PM The USA collapsed from a 2-0 lead as the Czechs came back and won in the shootout. Mike Modano's goal was thus his last in the tournament. Sweden barely scraped by Switzerland, coming from behind for a 2-1 win. Canada survives Slovak scare 12/5/2005 5:26:04 PM Joe Thornton's game winning goal saved Canada from quarterfinal defeat after trailing Slovakia late in the game. Rick Nash got three points and Simon Gagne scored twice. Canada's next game is against Russia, on Saturday, after their shootout victory against Finland. Nash, Thornton put you in contention 11/5/2005 12:39:08 AM All seven entries with both Rick Nash and Joe Thornton were in the top eight positions after round two, clearly showing that picking these standouts were critical to success in the pool. The battle for first (Richard Gretzinger) and second (Russell Reed) amounts to Hossa vs Jagr, while first and third (Sean Smith) is Kovalchuk vs Datsyuk. Round 2 ends 11/5/2005 12:32:59 AM We still have a close race as we enter the medal round. The top entries in round 2 were Russell Reed and Harris Beder, with 30 points each as both try to close in on leader Richard Gretzinger. They also had the second-best position gain, rising 3 spots. The dynamic duo of Camilla Marion and Karen Patterson rose 5 spots from 19th to 14th, though they were as high as 10th. Please report any bugs, or provide any
feedback, to Mitch.
