Opening Analysis / Round 1 / Round 2 / Round 3 / Final

Round 2 Analysis
Round two's offensive burst - in all four lengthy series but particularly Pittsburgh-Washington - provided a boost to numerous entries and has allowed this year's pool to smash previous second-round records. Mike Walsh collected 78 points in the round - a significant jump over the previous round two record of 56 set in 2001 - and also the record for any round (63 - Rd.1 2001). Mike's total score thus far also sets a record - widely trouncing the previous round two total of 107, also set in 2001. In total, 30 people bested both records.

This is no guarantee that the pool's high score will be broken, however. In 2001 most in the pool predicted a Colorado victory over New Jersey (giving Ray Bourque his Cup) while this season, many picks were lost after round two. Only Martha Gill and Andy Hotson are left with all nine picks still active.

Can Marc-Andre Fleury turn up his play and be the king-maker?
Can Marc-Andre Fleury turn up his play and be the pool's king-maker?
It's mostly Detroit and Pittsburgh from here
Last year at this point, most of the pool had both Detroit and Pittsburgh picks remaining, essentially nullifying the effect of the most important players. This year, we again have mostly Detroit and Pittsburgh remaining, however they were picked in smaller numbers and as a result, will indeed have an impact - particularly by those with Penguins on their entry.

Pavel Datsyuk is the only forward remaining who was on more than half of the entries - 105 - although he has only 5 points in these playoffs. Other forwards Evgeni Malkin (70), Henrik Zetterberg (69), and Sidney Crosby (65) are performing much better. These were the four most popular players last year. It will be up to Marian Hossa (35), Johan Franzen (10), and a handful of 'Canes and 'Hawks - led by Eric Staal (22) and Martin Havlat (9) to make the difference for their owners.

On defense, Nicklas Lidstrom (77 picks) is the only remaining top draw. Sergei Gonchar (16) and Brian Rafalski (14) are or have been injured and the only remaining player with more than a few picks is Brian Campbell (8).

Goaltending may prove an interesting story. Marc-Andre Fleury was picked 17 times while Cam Ward and Chris Osgood have 7 picks each. Nikolai Khabibulin was picked four times.

Change is not an option - contenders are coming from below
It's been a number of years since we've seen major turnover beyond the second round of the pool, and this year we are expecting nearly wholesale change from the folks who were competitive through round two (although you can argue that Martha Gill has been hovering near that group). Leader Mike Walsh, along with Judy Wood and Samuel Wexler - who were alternating the lead for most of the pool thus far - have all lost six or seven picks and are likely to drop right out of the top five, if not the top ten.

Martha Gill has a full slate of players and no nearby competitors with more than six picks, and she is projected to jump out to a significant lead after round three. Her ultimate success would be more assured if Carolina defeats Pittsburgh or of Chicago upsets Detroit. She is guaranteed to have at least three players in the last round.

Andy Hotson starts round three 17 points behind Martha but also has nine players - just the opposite of Martha with three from Detroit rather than Pittsburgh. A Detroit-Carolina final could help him close the gap and complete a surprising come-from-behind win.

Jerome Brouard and Ryan Slack are positioned well to challenge for the money with their Detroit and Pittsburgh picks - particularly if Detroit wins the Cup. Ryan starts three points behind Jerome but has Marc-Andre Fleury extra. Li Tan (significant other of last year's winner Bo Chen) and Karen Savoie (who challenged Bo to the finish) also have six from Detroit and Pittsburgh including Fleury, and picked the Penguins to win - with the 10 point bonus trumping their nine-point deficit.

And finally Jay Dart and Alex Walsh come from as far back as Andy but also have seven or eight players - they could challenge depending on the combination of players scoring.

Wonder Goalies reportedly playing wonderful golf
Round one saw the unexpected emergence of two young goalies as the stars of their respective teams. But in round two, Jonas Hiller of Anaheim and Simeon Varlamov of Washington took back seats to their team's efforts and although they made it to game seven, were both eliminated. We are left with the tried-and-true goalies - in fact there are few players at any position that are surprising enough to be considered dark-horse picks.

Mitch's predictions
I did pretty well in round two by calling three of the four series, bring my total this year to 8-4. For round three I'll add my voice to the chorus of people predicting a rematch in the Cup finals - Pittsburgh and Detroit.

Projected Round 3 Standings

Here are the projected scores and rankings for after round 3. The projection assumes (wrongly, of course) that the players you have alive will produce in round 3 at the same average rate as in rounds 1 and 2, so Chris Osgood would get half a shutout, half an assist, and four wins.
